The engineering competency model is expansive, but interviews with employers identified desirable competencies that go beyond the model. These Wild Card competencies are like superpowers that make you more effective across all other competency categories and help with career planning and interviewing.

Balanced and healthy. Integrates social, physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, intellectual, financial and occupational factors in a holistic way.

  1. Reflect on your own needs and assertively set limits or say no to requests when appropriate.
  2. Try different workspace setups and work schedules to find ones that support healthy habits and high performance.
  3. Combat stressful feelings with physical activity, meaningful conversations, mindfulness practice, healthy eating, and sufficient rest.
